Many types of debt collection practices are prohibited.
If you have a debt in collections, educate yourself on what types of debt collection practices are prohibited to protect yourself from creditor harassment. For instance, debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse you or any third parties they contact. Also, debt collectors may not:
-use any threats of violence or harm;
-publish a list of consumers who refuse to pay their debts (except to a credit bureau such as Experian, Equifax and Transunion);
-use obscene or profane language when trying to collect on the debt; or
-repeatedly use the telephone to annoy and harass a debtor.
